Captives of the Spanish Lady
Duncan Richardson
On the morning of January 28th, 1919, a train load of Queenslanders pulled into Tenterfield, to be told they could travel no further. The border was closed because of the flu outbreak in Sydney and they were quarantined for at least a week. Squashed into every available billet in town, they waited while more trains arrived from the south, extending the quarantine period indefinitely. How they and the locals coped while governments dithered and bickered makes a fascinating and often amusing story.
