James Douglas Ogilby grew up in Altnachree Castle in the second half of the 19th century, a time of great change in Ireland, and his forbidden romance with Mary Jane Jameson has been the folklore of the nearby village of Donemana for over 130 years. Mary came to Australia in 1885 where he became an esteemed fish scientist at the Australian Museum and later at the Queensland Museum. The search to uncover James' story led the author on a journey to trace his life and work in Ireland, USA and Australia and to discover why the family's grand home Altnachree, built by his father William Ogilby, is now a ruin.
